Happy New Year!

Today marks the start of the new ecclesiastical - or liturgical - year in the Orthodox Church. This is also called indiction from a Roman term for a period of 15 years that marked the reassessment of taxes. Eventually, indiction came to mean a year within that cycle, and it also became new ecclesiastical year for the Orthodox Church.

Also on this day we commemorate Jesus entering the temple in Jerusalem and reading from Isaiah

This day starts year 7531according to the Byzantine Creation Era Calendar, aka Annus Mundi, and is dated from the supposed start of Creation. The dating used comes from dates given in the Septuagint. That could be a whole series of blog posts by itself, and all I wanted to do was just wish y'all a happy new year!

So, happy new year! May it be blessed!

Please pray for me, a sinner.
